Earthmate LT-40 GPS Receiver

Strengths: 1. Finds the satellites quickly. 2. Plenty on POI. 3. Many features / customizable.

Weakness: Maps - outdated.

Received the GPS a few days ago and still on a learning curve. I surely does what's advertised and has some features (like adding / drawing routes) that most GPS devices don't have.
Maps are a little old (my street does not appear on the map but Navigon and Garmin has it) but I just found out that an update is available.
Overall, I'm satisfied with the Earthmate LT-40 GPS Receiver.

Solid GPS Unit

Strengths: Acquires satellites fast and stays locked on

Weakness: Having to use a laptop in the car

Overall, this is a solid product. I like using the regular GPS units better as I don't have to have a laptop in the car, but this works nicely when there is someone else riding along. If you're someone who drives around with people, this would be a good buy. If you're someone who travels alone, there are better options. Overall, the software is pretty easy to use.

It uses STMicroelectronic's Teseo chipset, which is supposed to be better than the highly regarded SiRFStarIII chipset (used in Garmin Nuvi and many other PND). For it to work with other mapping software like Microsoft Street and Trips, you will need to install or download a USB serial-emulation software.

Earthmate LT-40 is a distant second to Microsoft's Streets & Trips for most of us

Delorme lured my hard-earned money into this purchase by offering two rebates for this product. After the maximum posted waiting period, I received a notice stating I was ineligible for the rebate as it hadn't been posted within the promotion period. I mailed my thoroughly prepared rebate submission well within the rebate period on THE DAY I received the shipment from the merchant.

Simply, Delorme is defrauding consumers its products in order to boost sales against Microsoft. While not a big fan of Microsoft, I can say their product blows this one away for most drivers, especially now that they offer the two-way traffic assistance and redirect.

The Delorme LT-40 could conceivably be better if you do most of your driving in marginal reception areas, or if you are interested in paying a lot more for the professional maps available from delorme's website. The social networking site delorme set up has yet to really be worth visiting, though this could change in a year or so.

At full retail, this product is not worth it. If the rebates of $30 were paid, it would be a fair value.

Thbe Best GPS!

Strengths: More info than I'll ever use. When you take the notebook out of the car you take all your data with you. Clear and readable maps, Great data base of locations, of interest.

Weakness: None that I could find!

This product is so awesome that I think anyone with a laptop should have. I had a dash mounted GPS (forgot the brand cost 169.00)Went to use it one day (kept it in the storage between the front seats)and it was gone. Who took it well I had the car in for service, an oil change, car wash who knows for sure. I can't go accusing everyone. Who ever took it also had all my home info on it. Now if...

Now if someone takes the GPC module I still have all my data on my laptop so that cant be stolen. If you have a laptop get one of these and when you travel you can see the whole map on the larger screen. I'm, thinking of buying one of those little net books for work and can use it for my GPS and not my 17" Dell Laptop.
